What is Airbnb, VRBO, and Furnished Finder? Part 2: VRBO?
In our previous post, we discussed the popular rental platform, Airbnb. This post will explain the predecessor to Airbnb - VRBO.
What is VRBO?
Vacation Rentals By Owners, or VRBO, is an online marketplace created in 1995 that connects vacation rental owners to travelers. VRBO caters to vacationers and families looking for entire property rentals as apposed to Airbnb which caters to single room rentals as well as entire home rentals. With VRBO, guests can request to say for a week or longer. While some VRBO properties do offer one night rentals, most rentals through VRBO are weekly and monthly with some offering extended rental options. Furthermore, while there might be some unique property stays on VRBO, such as treehouses or houseboats, the majority of VRBO listings are standard experiences such as houses, townhomes, or condos.
What do I need to provide in a VRBO rental property?
Like Airbnb properties, VRBO property owners need to provide all guests with the basic amenities you would expect in a short term rental, or at least disclose that basic amenities are not available. Most VRBO guests expect to stay in a place that very closely resembles their personal home with things including a fully stocked kitchen, full bathroom, and a living space.
Room rental vs entire home?
While Airbnb offers single room rentals and entire home rentals, VRBO does not rent single rooms or shared spaces. Because of this VRBO renters will never share space with the property owner.
Is VRBO right for you?
When deciding if VRBO is right for you, you need to look at your personal situation in regards to your property. Do you have a vacation home that is vacant except for the few weeks a year it is used by yourself, family, or friends? Do you have just a portion of your home for rent or are you able to rent out the entire space? While VRBO might not be as new and hip as Airbnb, it is still a great option for property owners looking to make extra income on an investment property.
